I've detailed this plenty, but here is a little more.
Qabalah is an operating philosophy. You could say that it is at the center of every aspect of my life. I consider
it an explanation of purpose, existence and a roadmap to navigate challenges and achieve seemingly
unachievable objectives. There are two dimensions to it that seem relevant to the next phase of my life, the
spiritual and the professional.
The spiritual side is well, spiritual so a challenge to convey in a short email. It is my religious belief
system, although I'm not at all religious (another topic in itself). The application of this system to everyday
life is incredibly powerful.
On the professional side, it's best captured through the many books I've read from Jim Collins (Good-to-
Great, Great-by-Choice, BE 2.0, How the Mighty Fall, etc.). BE 2.0 has a section to the effect of "The
Map," which is the 21st century version of Qabalah, at least in terms of navigating an organization
through any challenges. The "Map" has four quadrants. Within each quadrant are circles, and within
the circles are lines which denote level of importance. The top left of the Map covers "Who." The
bottom right is Metrics. The book covers it pretty well.
So, if you imagine the circles in each quadrant as an objective, a destination the journey through the circle
begins at the 5 o'clock position and continues along the circle clockwise until returning to the starting
position, and then the circle is complete. You then advance to the next circle. Many circles make up a
quadrant, just as many quadrants make up the Map. Simple in concept, but challenging to
implement. Nevertheless, those that navigate it successfully should achieve their desired objectives
and those that master it, should be able to achieve almost anything.
So what does this all mean? It means that I started with a vision for a payments company that I wanted to
last a 1,000 years (yeah, literally a thousand years). I created a Map to navigate the first ~20 years and I'm
now at the end of that Map, the last circle of the last quadrant. I've achieved almost every objective along
the way...and far more.
But I'm still here, so it means I need a new Map. This takes time to develop, and it's not as simple
as a 36-year old putting pen to paper to commit a set of strategic ambitions to be conquered by middle
age, but there it is. It also means I transition to "Level 5" leadership, which is also from Collins.
I began this "Map-making" (soul searching) process over the winter holidays. Q1 was about
socializing the "Level 5" transition, and a lot of that took place at the executive retreat. I wasn't
planning on completing the new Map until the summer, so it was a bit ahead of schedule, when
I was in Vegas last month I found myself staring at a blank whiteboard with colored pens
in hand...thinking about what the future holds. The CardConnect opportunity had not been presented to
me yet.
As you know, at Shift4, we've always embraced this type of operating philosophy. I even have
Qabalah tattoos all over my body. Sam is now fluent as well, but he is not at your level of mastery and
enthusiasm. As an example, the below image is the design layout for our holiday cards last year. This is
just one of countless examples of our application of this operating philosophy.

mastered it, but don't know what it is, nor would they care (Schultz, Bezos, Jobs). Then there's you.
This is what I embrace. It's in every fiber of my being.
